Internship , Fall 2016
Project Type
Eco-affordable modular house
Location
Assinie Mafia, Côte d'Ivoire
Located at approximately 100km from the economic capital Abidjan, the coastal village of Assinie Mafia has become over the years a popular seaside resort, privatized by the upper class who owns several secondary residences along its shores.
In opposition to this exclusionary movement, Koffi & Diabaté is launching the “Bamboo Operation”, a real estate project which aims to create a mix environment by introducing people to a more inclusive lifestyle. From young executives to families, the ecovillage is destined to a population committed to live together.
Oriented towards the development of an ecological neighborhood, my participation in this project focused on the design of an eco-affordable and flexible family home for Ivory Coast emerging middle class. Putting forward a new type of dwelling, the structure is entirely made of bamboo, an abundant material that remains largely unexploited locally, due to the lack of expertise.
The design aims to integrate itself into the local setting and takes advantage of modular panels to establish a harmonious transition between interior and exterior spaces. Based on a repetitive grid of 3.6*3 m and the use of 4 to 10 cm diameter bamboos, the lightweight structure can be built in less than a month. Coming in different shapes or sizes, the Bamboo Pavilion is an affordable home that grows with you. Easy to maintain, recyclable and reusable, its sustainable material reduce the need for transport and energy while boosting the development of local industry.
